In the time that we’ve been doing this magazine, we’ve done features on Mystic Tattoo, P. Krol, Nick Sharratt, and printed countless pictures of awesome work from the artists at Mystic. One thing that we hadn’t done, was a feature on Miro himself. He has been building a name for himself across the country as one of the top artists in the business, and if you’ve seen his work, you probably already know why. I recently got the chance to sit down with him and catch up on all of the new stuff happening around Mystic Tattoo.

Dave Muller: How long have you been tattooing for?

Miro: I’ve been tattooing for 8 years now, but as I look back, I’ve only been doing what I want to do for the last three years. Before that, I was stuck in a shop doing only flash, simple stuff, without any chances to do anything else. That shop did no custom work at all, it was in Florida and set up to get the tourist business. People only came in for small stuff.

Dave Muller: What did you learn from the experience?

Miro: Nothing. Well, I learned that I wanted to create new stuff, and not just copy things over and over. I wanted to make every piece individual. I want to challenge myself to see how far I can take it, as I’m only competing with myself. I want to make every piece better than the last.

Dave Muller: What’s new at Mystic Tattoo since the last time we talked?

Miro: We’ve expanded the shop, and took over the storefront next door. It serves as our art gallery, waiting area, consultations desk, as well as retail store. We sell tattoo related clothes and jewelry. We have a really big selection of body jewelry. Also, I’ve taken on an apprentice, Trevor Shaw. He’s very talented at drawings and illustrations. He’s already done a couple of great pieces, and he’s got big potential long term. He already has his own style, and he’s a great addition to our shop.

Dave Muller: What’s it like running your own shop?

Miro: It’s a pain in the butt. It takes over your time, there’s so much stuff to do. You have to keep your clients happy, you have to keep your artists happy. On one hand, it’s awesome, because I get to do what I want. We have an awesome team here, and we get to create some awesome stuff and killer artwork. How could you ask for more? But, on the other hand, I have to deal with tons of paperwork, and all of the other hassles that come with running a business. On somedays, that can take over the art side. That’s just the price that you have to pay for the luxury of being able to do your own stuff.

Dave Muller: Speaking of that stuff, what kinds of things do you like to do?

Miro: I love doing both realistic and surrealistic pieces. Things like demons and dragons, fantasy stuff. I also like doing portraits, tribal, bio-mechanical, oriental and new school. Pretty much anything that challenges me.

Dave Muller: What do you see in your future?

Miro: I plan to go back to Europe to attend some conventions and meet some new artists, as well as get some more work done on me. I’ve already got some work that was done by American artists, now I want to get some done by Europeans. It’s a slightly different flavor of art. I want to go to more conventions in the States as well. I just want to tattoo.
